LEO ASEMOTA PROPOSAL: MAP OF A CITY

A decade ago Leo Asemota undertook a photographic essay Map of a City in which he travelled across London for a year photographing the iconic Metropolitan Police’s site-specific Witness Appeal boards.

To mark its 10th anniversary EotLA will be presenting aspects of the project in the Contemporary Rooms during Islington Exhibits as a proposal for future presentations of the work, which has never been exhibited. Included are slide projections from over 3000 images, test prints, Asemota’s travel diaries and newspaper cuttings along with drawings describing his ideas for the display of specific themes in the project.

We will also be previewing “Leo Asemota Mapping the City” an ongoing documentary produced by the General Production Office.

Leo Asemota was born in Benin City in the Midwest of Nigeria. He settled in London in 1998 soon after completing his studies at the London Institute. Recent exhibitions include solo shows in the Contemporary Rooms at EotLA, London; Centrum Beeldeende Kunst Zuidoost, Amsterdam and Metal at Edge Hill Station Liverpool with group shows and screenings at Netherlands Media Art Institute, Amsterdam; Stedelijk Museum (Bureau Amsterdam); Autocenter Berlin; Aberystwyth University and Bodhi Art New York.

A survey of phase one of “The Ens Project” Asemota’s ongoing work will be presented in the exhibition First Principles at the New Art Exchange in September 2011.
